Our Weather log sheet (available on-line soon)
1. Anemometer vane - this measures
wind direction
2. Wind cups - these measure wind
speed
3. Rain collector - this measures rainfall
4. UV and solar sensors - these measure
radiation of wavelengths 290-390nm
and 300-1100nm respectively
5. Sensor Interface Module - this is
powered by a solar panel and transmits
sensor readings to an indoor base
station
6. Radiation shield - this contains
temperature and humidity sensors

In order to gain the Meteorologist Badge
you must be able to complete the following
tasks.
Task 1
Be able to explain and demonstrate how the
following are measured:
.. wind force and direction;
.. cloud type and amount;
.. temperature;
.. pressure;
.. rainfall amount.
Task 2
Keep a record of these weather conditions
for at least two weeks:
.. wind force (using the Beaufort Scale)
and direction;
.. weather;
.. temperature;
.. pressure;
.. rainfall amount;
.. cloud type and amount.
Task 3
Understand at least three different ways
in
which clouds are formed.
Task 4
Know the typical weather produced in your
own area by 'warm' and 'cold' air masses
in summer and winter, noting the effects
of land and sea. Understand the weather
associated with a change of air mass at a
'front'.
Task 5
Know how synoptic weather maps are
produced, and be able to understand a
simple map with fronts and isobars similar
to those shown on television and printed in
some newspapers. Relate your observations
in Task 2 to these maps.
Task 6
Understand the effects of temperature,
wind and water on the human body in cases
of hypothermia and exhaustion.
